The King's Banquet, The King's Terms

Matthew 22:1-14

Outline:

I. The Rejected Invitation (v.1-7)

II. The Reissued Invitation (v.8-10)

III. The Required Attire (v.11-14)

For Further Reflection:

1. The invited guests rejected the king’s invitation for various reasons—some were distracted by ordinary priorities, while others actively opposed him. What are some ways people today might passively dismiss or actively reject Jesus’ authority? How can even good things become excuses for ignoring Him?

2. The king extended his invitation to the masses, gathering both the bad and the good. What does this teach us about God’s grace and the scope of the gospel invitation? How does this serve as a warning to those who benefit from the Christian community, yet remain apathetic toward Jesus?

3. The improperly dressed guest appears to presume that his own attire is good enough. What is the difference between trusting in our own goodness and being clothed in the righteousness of Christ? How might someone today presume upon God’s grace while still insisting on their own terms?
