Sons Freed to Sacrifice

May 17, 2026    Pastor Matt Webster

Outline:

I. Sons enjoy the privilege of freedom.

II. Sons adopt a posture of sacrificial surrender.

III. Sons trust the gracious provision of their Father.

For Further Reflection:

Identity:

1) Jesus says, “Then the sons are free.” What burdens do Christians still tend to carry as though they must earn God’s acceptance? How does knowing you are accepted as a child of God in Christ change the way you approach obedience?

2) Where are you most tempted to forget your identity in Christ? Failure? Performance?Comparison? Shame? People-pleasing?

Posture:

3) Why is it important that a sacrificial posture flows from sonship rather than toward sonship?

4) Jesus had the right to refuse payment, yet chose humility and restraint. Why is it often difficult for us to surrender our “rights”? Are there freedoms, preferences, or comforts you may need to willingly lay down for the spiritual good of others?

God's Provision:

5) Have you ever experienced God providing for you while walking in costly obedience? Where might God currently be calling you to trust Him before you can see the provision?

6) What does this passage teach us about the character of Jesus? What is one concrete way you can reflect the posture of Christ this week?
