Finding Joy in the Riches of God
Ecclesiastes 5:13-6:12
Dr. David Hansen
*The empty-handed hoarder (5:13-17)
*The joyful receiver (5:18-20)
*The insatiable striver (6:1-9)
*The generous Giver (5:18-20; 6:10-12)
For Further Reflection
1. Can you think of ways you are currently gripping resources or possessions that you could be enjoying or sharing with others?
2. Ecclesiastes 6:9 says, “Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite”. What “next thing” are you currently chasing? How does pursuing what you don’t have yet keep you from enjoying what you have already?
3. Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 shows us that everyday food, drink, and our daily work are gifts from God. Which of these gifts do you tend to take for granted, and what specific practices could you adopt to remind yourself to enjoy them with thankfulness to God?
4. Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-9 and contrast verse 9 with the hoarding described in Ecclesiastes 5:13-17. What effect is Jesus’ radical generosity meant to have on our hearts, and what is one specific way you can reflect it to someone else this week?
