For Further Reflection: 

1) Why are difficult experiences often better teachers than comfortable ones? How have you seen that in your own life?

2) Where are you tempted to romanticize the past and look backward in nostalgia? How can looking backward keep us from trusting what God is doing today?

3) Read verses 13–14. Why is it difficult to accept both prosperity and adversity as coming under God's sovereign hand? How does believing God is wise change the way we respond to circumstances we cannot control?

4) How does remembering our own limitations and sin help us become more humble, more teachable, and more willing to listen to God? How does the gospel help us trust God's voice above every other?
