Ponder:

1. In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus shared the tale of poor Lazarus and the rich man. What are the parallels with Psalm 49? How should Jesus’ parable motivate us in our priorities and relationships today?

2. Meditate on Psalm 49 and list the false assumptions reflected in the psalm by people trusting in riches and pursuing their own glory. Which of these assumptions are most tempting, compelling or evident in our community or your life today? Pray over these that sober truth and a humble dependence on the Redeemer would prevail.

3. With the backdrop of Psalm 49, read Matthew 19:16-30. How do you explain Jesus’ statement in Matthew 19:23? What actions are a fitting response to the temptation to trust in wealth and the risk Jesus mentions in Matthew 13:22? What actions will you take to better realize Matthew 6:20 toward laying up treasures in the Kingdom of Christ?
