From Conflict to Unity

May 18, 2025    Pastor Matt Webster

Notes

1. The Cause of Conflict – Pride (3:2-11)

2. The Cost of Conflict – Preoccupation (3:12-21)

3. A Call to Unity – Partnership (4:1-3)

Further Reflection

1) Paul warns against “dogs,” “evildoers,” and “mutilators of the flesh” (v.2). What kind of conflict is Paul addressing here, and how does he respond to it? Paul lists his religious credentials and then says he counts them as loss (vv. 4–8). How can pride in our background, status, or personal “rightness” cause conflict with others?

2) Paul urges believers to imitate him and to follow godly examples (v.17). How can healthy discipleship and mentorship help minimize relational conflict in a church? What are you doing to actively seek and promote intentional and missional community within the church?

3) Paul pleads with Euodia and Syntyche to “agree in the Lord” (4:2). What does it mean to “agree in the Lord” when there is disagreement? Is there a conflict in your life where you need to seek reconciliation or unity “in the Lord”? What would that look like practically?
